I hope you’re having an incredible summer, full of sun, sea, sand, and adventure.
I’ve been on vacation all week in Florida and woke up this morning feeling like I’ve had a few too many “last hurrahs.”
You know what I mean…. it’s summer, you’re at BBQ’s, bringing the kids for ice cream more often- maybe a few extra margaritas just because. During the year you might find it easier to pass on the extra indulgence, but it’s summer, it’s hot, why not just one more night of “treating yourself?”
I’m all for indulging, it’s not that I’m sitting here counting calories, but I feel like crap. Yes, I’m still getting up to run or take a yoga class, but my body feels ache-y and I know it’s not running on all cylinders because of the “crappy fuel” I’ve been feeding it. Even though I’ve tried to be mindful of the way I feel after, I forget to remind myself… lol
So this morning I tried something new- I made a video to remind myself how I want to feel. I just got back from hot yoga, feeling all pure and clean, and the last thing I wanted to do was put something un-clean in my body. So before I got out of my car, I whipped out my Iphone and took a quick 10 second video reminding myself how great I felt and how I wanted to keep feeling this great- which meant I had to fuel up with healthy foods, and no more sugar.
Out to dinner tonight….. again….my son ordered Nutella cheesecake and it took me a second to pull my fork back and put it down, but all I had to do was just think of that video I made to remind myself that 2 minutes from now the taste of the cheesecake would be gone, but the crappy feeling would be back in the morning; so my plan worked.
Like I said, I’m all for a celebratory cocktail or ice cream cone, but at a certain point it’s enough, and it’s important to find a tool to remind yourself how you want to feel, so that you can keep those indulgences from becoming a summer long nutrition disaster.
Maybe it’s a mantra, or sniffing peppermint oil when you have a craving- maybe you try my tactic and film a quick reminder to make better choices on a regular basis. Whatever it is, put it into use when you’re about to eat dessert for the 5th night in a row or drink that third martini that you really don’t need.
XO
